ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Shelby Flowers, owner of The Reading and Spelling Studio. I grew up in Southwest Florida and live on Bainbridge Island, Wa. I have been certified by Susan Barton in the Barton Reading & Spelling System since August 2021.

I received a bachelor's degree in Microbiology and a master's degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. I then worked as a Clinical Microbiologist at a few major university hospitals for about 20 years. As you can tell, I never originally planned on becoming a dyslexia reading and spelling specialist. Once I had children, my life story changed.

Both my children are dyslexic. With my oldest child, I spent countless hours researching and trying different reading programs. I understand the frustration, loss of confidence, and the tears shared by both child and parent. My oldest child is such a bright and intelligent individual but none of the reading programs I tried seemed to help her. 

 

Finally, I decided to try the Barton Reading & Spelling System. I wish I had tried this program sooner! In a very short amount of time, I saw a significant turnaround in both my children. Their improvement inspired me to become a Certified Barton Tutor and reach other individuals who may also be struggling with these same issues and to provide them with the tools to help them succeed in life. Don't ever give up!
